Public Walking Tour of Cambridge: Town and Gown

(6 customer reviews)

£5.00£25.00

A walk through the ancient city and university of world fame, where every nook and cranny is full of history. We shall walk through Cambridge City Centre, admire the magnificent buildings, and hear intriguing stories about the past and present of the city and the university. From Romans to Rutherford, from waterfowl hunters to Winnie the Pooh and Stephen Hawking, from quirky old pubs to pulsars, from Cromwell to the cloning of frogs…

We’ll talk about numerous pranks of mischievous Cambridge students, about great discoveries, mediaeval strife, religious turmoil, and the struggle for the throne. We’ll dive into a kaleidoscope of architectural styles: an austere Anglo-Saxon church, breathtaking Tudor Gothic, and enlightened classicism of Christopher Wren.

Along the way, we’ll discuss how the worldview and life itself have changed over the centuries, and what Cambridge is like today, both the university and the city.

The tour will include a visit to a non-charging college wherever possible, and we may also explore King’s College Chapel for an additional fee (paid separately to King’s College) if agreed with the group.

What made the guide stand out for me is that she doesn’t just point out places, she’ll describe in great and interesting (never dull) detail the significance of the place, she’ll explain the research it uncovered in an accessible way. She knows everything Cambridge inside and out. If there are kids in the group she pays special attention to them making sure they’re happy and entertained.

Tanya was a fabulous guide. We didn’t want to just visit the colleges, we wanted to get to
know Cambridge. Tanya is so knowledgeable and so friendly. We had a memorable tour.
    Thank you so much.

Tanya was a extremely knowledgeable and friendly guide who led us round the highlights of
Cambridge and did the best to make opportunities to stop in the dry given the poor
weather whilst still giving us all the information we could want about the places …
